Alice Street Centre
For many years the TRCA Alice Street “Centre” on the corner of Cook & Alice Streets in Atherton has been providing overnight respite 24hours, 7 days per week.
With up to 4 guests able to stay at a time, the Centre has built up a reputation of being a caring, supportive and enjoyable “home away from home” for people living with a disability.
While the Centre has many guests who frequent and make use of the facility on a regular basis, we are also able to care for the needs of irregular visitors who need to make use of our services only occasionally. Our flexibility regarding Guest frequency is an important part of fulfilling out role in the community. This also extends to coordinating for emergency requests.
While TRCA is unable to have an “Emergency Bed” available at all times, our Coordination team will strive to assist when requests are received.
During stays in the Respite House, Guests will be encouraged and supported to participate in a variety of activities, both indoors and outdoors. At times these activities will involve leaving the Centre to partake in “excursions” such as BBQ’s at one of many local lakes or parks. The Support team at the Centre have access to a large selection of craft materials and other indoors activities which can be utilised either by Guest choice, or due to inclement weather.
The Centre is open all year with the exception of a short closure period for maintenance, once per annum between Christmas and New Year.
HOLIDAY HOUSE
“TRIAL” changes to Holiday House Service Model
Our New & Exciting Community Service Program
As you may be aware we have been trialling a new day respite service at the Holiday House. Through the process of exploring what type of service we can offer people and through consultation with a number of people with disabilities we hit on the idea of instead of people with disabilities receiving a service (e.g. day respite) that we could support people with disabilities to provide a valuable community service.
And hence the beginning of our New and Exciting Community Service Program : Mountain Movers Promotions
The Mountain Movers Promotional Team will consist of people with disabilities and their support staff (provided through the Holiday House Day Respite Program). The Program will be based at the Holiday House in Magnolia Street Atherton and will provide a promotional service to community groups, services and local businesses.
Each day's activities will be based upon the various roles that the Team Members chose to play. For some it may be that you man our information stall and let people know about the particular community event/service or business we are helping to promote. For others you may assist with preparing/folding pamphlets/ draw or paint promotional materials/ prepare and cook food or join the Music/Vocal Group.
The various roles are : Promotional Representative (PR), Music Group Member – Singer/ Musician, Sound Man, Lighting etc Cameraman, Interviewer, Artist, Reporter (Newsletter), Cook Ticket Seller/Fundraiser and many more.
If it sounds like something you may be interested in but aren't sure, then give Debbie Lowrie a call at TRCA and we can talk it through or find other roles or activities for you.
On Thursdays we have 2 Musicians/Teachers who, through their support worker role will help establish a Music/Vocal Group . This vocal group will come together with the intention of performing in public at local events and venues. Don't worry if you can't sing or play an instrument come along and enjoy the music anyway.
If you or a family member are interested in being a part of our Mountain Movers Promotional Team or would like more information about the program then please contact the Mabel Street office on 07 4091 3840 and you can also check us out at www.mountainmoverspromotions.com
Adult Lifestyle Support Program – Shared Supported Accommodation
This program enables individuals living with a disability, who are in receipt of recurrent funding from Disability Services, to maximise the supports they receive, whilst living as independently as possible.
People in this program are assisted to live in their community, in their own home, with compatible peers, as independently as possible.
Support workers provide assistance with banking, shopping, domestic chores and skill development if and when required. Assistance and support is provided to enable the residents to pursue their own particular interests, and become contributing members of their community.
The main aim of the Adult Lifestyle Program is to help service users achieve a valued role in the community and for the individual to pursue their own interests and chosen activities. |
